What Is MDP?
MDP is a part of the Intelligent Compaction (IC) system. It measures the rolling resistance on the drum of the soil compactor, providing an indication of soil stiffness and load-bearing strength. This allows the user to make the minimum number of passes to ensure the compaction is adequate to hold a road, building, parking lot, or whatever else might be going on the site. In most cases, it reduces the number of passes, as well as allows for uniformity, making it a real game changer in the construction industry.
The Key to Uniformity
Uniformity is a common concern on worksites. It can be difficult to tell if an entire site is compacted the same way, leaving room for human error, and ultimately, costly mistakes. IC utilizes a GPS map combined with MDP to track where contractors have already worked and to measure compaction along the way. MDP technology makes conformity much more achievable and therefore minimizes the risk of error and post-construction repairs due to weak areas.
A Cost Savings Opportunity
Not only does MDP have cost-savings implications for the construction company completing the initial project, but it is expected to be able to save money for the owner of the building, roadway, or parking lot as well. With uniformity throughout the job site, the lifespan of what is built on top of that site will be increased. For instance, if MDP is used to determine uniformity in compaction on the site where a road will be built, it’s less likely that the road built on top of it will need repairs beyond occasional wear and tear.
Increased Productivity
Traditionally, contractors may pass over the same area seven to eight times in order to compact the soil. With MDP technology, contractors are more likely to be able to make fewer passes since they can be confident in the compaction level of the soil below them. In many cases, contractors may be able to make two to three passes where they would once have done eight, saving time and money. Combined with the ability to map the area they've worked on with GPS, workers can become more productive and efficient, while ensuring the job site is ready to be built on.
