PARTS OF A ROTARY DRILL

Mast or Derrick The mast is also called the derrick although technically a mast is usually always used for land rigs, while a derrick is used for offshore rigs. A mast is used for lifting and positioning of the drill and all of the other parts that are responsible for the actual drilling of the hole, or the wellbore. The mast is the tower you see from afar that marks an oil drilling station. It is usually assembled on the ground and then raised into position on the job site by draw works. Traveling Block The traveling block does just that: travels up and down in the derrick or mast. The traveling block works in conjunction with the crown block, wire rope drill line, and other parts that help the drill to lift the drill pipe, drill string, and casings up and down into the well bore. It consists of a multi-sheave pulley and usually consists of between four and six individual sheaves. These attach to the crown block, which is at the very top of the derrick. The traveling block is usually identified with a bright yellow color on the rig. Rotary Hose The purpose of the rotary hose is to convey water or oil-based mud and other fluids for use in the drilling process. It connects the standpipe to the swivel and helps to move the kelly. Drilling fluid is pumped through the drillstring, which is the name given to the entire column of tools, including the drill pipe, shaft collar, tools, and the drill bit itself. Both the drillstring and the pumping fluid work in conjunction in order for the drilling process to be fluid. It is also known as the mud hose or the kelly hose. Drill Pipe The drill pipe is integral in the process of drilling. It is responsible for spinning the drill bit and circulating the drilling fluid. The drill bit is what is attached to the drill pipe and is what does the actual crushing of the rock around it. It is hollow piping made from steel or aluminum alloy. Drill pipes are essential for drilling and have to be able to withstand large pressures.

USES OF A ROTARY DRILL

As we've seen, a rotary drill is used to cut deep boreholes into rock formations using a sharp rotating drill bit and pressure. There are many different techniques used in rotary drilling, depending on what exactly you are seeking. Rotary drilling is very useful. It is effective at cutting through hard rock formations and for extracting materials, such as oil and gas. Rotary drilling is used extensively by the environmental industry in order to install groundwater monitoring wells. It is also used to drill holes for water wells for homes. Rotary drilling is utilized by the coal industry to drill into hard rock. Explosives are then placed to create the ability to extract coal. In sum, anytime you need a hole drilled, rotary drilling can be used, from construction to pipeline and sewer laying.
