world would not be the same without the invention of heavy equipment. We would get far less work done, and work would take infinitely longer to complete. After all, gone are the days of the Sui Empire in China where millions of Chinese citizens were forced to work on infrastructure improvements, such as the Grand Canal, back in 604 AD (thank goodness). Trying to get that kind of manpower for the cost of labor today would take hundreds of years and billions of dollars. Luckily, we all have new and used heavy equipment to thank for the world we see around us.
Wagner Used Equipment Co offers the best Caterpillar used heavy equipment for sale. What is a Telehandler?
A Cat telehandler is a very useful heavy machine you will find in industry and in agricultural applications. First invented in 1977, the telehandler is primarily used for material handling capabilities, such as lifting objects up and down. These versatile machines are extremely similar to forklifts, except they have an extending boom that can lift objects high into the air. You can attach Caterpillar attachments as well to the boom, such as a basket, that would turn this machine into an elevating work platform. You can use it as a tractor, earth-moving machine, crane, and more. With so many uses, attachments, and applications, they are popular on construction sites, in roofing, and on cattle ranches.
PARTS OF A TELEHANDLER
Boom Lift & Tilt Cylinders
These cylinders are the parts responsible for moving the boom arm of your telehandler. Most operate from hydraulics, which uses hydraulic fluid that is pressurized inside a cylinder barrel where a piston and piston rod move. The barrel (or the tube you see) has a cap on one end and a cylinder head on the other. The piston moves back and forth from the cylinder head, effectively moving the boom arm. A hydraulic pump ensures the flow of the hydraulic fluid to move the piston.
Forks
The forks of the machine are what is on the end of the boom. This is also where you would switch out the different Cat attachments as well. Wagner offers a huge variety of different Cat forks for your use. Wagner Used Equipment carries block forks, construction forks, heavy duty fork carriages and tines, and industrial grapple forks at all of our Caterpillar dealer locations throughout Colorado, New Mexico, and far west Texas. These come in different sizes as well to fit your telehandler machine. Forks are incredibly useful for moving long, flat objects. You will see them moving boxes of supplies, moving hay bales around the farm, and lifting roofing materials. In addition, forks are great for moving pipes in the oil and gas industry, as well as moving lumber and trees in the lumber industry. Just having the ability to lift heavy objects easily and transport them saves you headaches, manpower, and money.
Boom
The boom is the name for the long arm that extends out from the chassis of a telehandler. It can extend out usually about 65 feet or so and can be elevated to about a 70 degree angle. Most can carry about 20,000 lbs when fully extended. As the arm extends out, the less weight it can hold so that the machine does not tip over. Most Cat telehandlers are equipped with devices known as outriggers that hold the machine down in order to prevent the tippage of the machine. However, all telehandlers have load restrictions when using the boom, so it's best to become familiar with your type of Cat telehandler.
Chassis
The chassis is just a fancy name for the frame and the main support of a vehicle. The chassis is usually what all of the other major component parts are attached to, such as the operator's cab in a telehandler, the wheel axle assemblies, the brakes, the wheel hubs, the drivetrain, and the suspension system. All heavy equipment has a chassis. For telehandlers, you can choose from two types of chassis, the articulated or the rigid chassis. The rigid chassis you will find in pallet work, and the articulated chassis, which is usually built on a heavy duty chassis, is made for earth-moving work. This is the type you will most likely find on construction sites.
Operator's Cab
The operator's cab is where the operator of the telehandler sits. Let's face it, operating heavy machinery all day long in inclement weather, hot summer days, or cool fall ones can be a chore. Having a superior and comfortable operator's cab can make all the difference. Caterpillar prides itself on making a cab with our customers in mind. We've incorporated ergonomic seats, screens from the sun, a mechanical suspension seat with a seat belt, and mirrors to see around you. There are grab bars so you won't slip when entering, as well as floor mats to protect the floor of your telehandler. In addition, the telehandler is primarily operated with a joystick that has a joystick wrist rest that is adjustable. It's important to avoid operator fatigue by taking breaks to give your eyes and brain a rest from the monotony of heavy equipment operations.
Stabilizers
In order to reduce tipping hazards and to enable you to lift higher capacities, some of Wagner's telehandler models come with stabilizers. These are located towards the front of the machine, and they can be employed or not used at all. By having a rotary joint between the upper and lower frames, telehandlers can be used as cranes. Stabilizers are great to have even when lifting lighter loads. They offer more stability and are thus easier to control and operate. They also offer peace of mind to those on the job site or in the platform as well. Having stabilizers on your telehandler may even impact your insurance premiums since they are a safety device.
