With an increase in demand for environmentally friendly and sustainable power solutions, many construction, mining, and agricultural businesses are searching for a way to operate their heavy equipment while minimizing their footprint. The Cat® brand is synonymous with advanced power solutions that are both efficient and environmentally friendly. Cat® offers a variety of power solutions, from hydrogen power to carbon capture to energy storage and battery power.

In today’s blog post from Wagner Used Equipment, we are going to explore four of the most impactful advanced power solutions that Caterpillar is currently working on. Hydrogen Power

Caterpillar® is using hydrogen power in a variety of ways, from fuel cells to hydrogen-powered generators. Fuel cells are two to three times more efficient than combustion engines, and their only byproduct is water vapor. Hydrogen-powered generators are also more efficient than traditional generators, and they produce no emissions.

While many Caterpillar® machines already utilize hydrogen on a blended basis, they are working to expand and improve upon this in the future. You can currently request a designed-to-order generator that works on 100 percent hydrogen. In addition, Caterpillar® is exploring the benefits of using hydrogen fuel cells to power both stationary and mobile applications.

Carbon Capture

Carbon capture is the process of capturing and storing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions before they are released into the atmosphere. This is beneficial because capturing carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere may be able to reduce our impact on the natural environment.

In an effort to reduce emissions, Caterpillar® has acquired CarbonPoint Solutions, a U.S.-based carbon capture technology company. CarbonPoint's technology concentrates and captures CO2 for utilization or sequestration, which reduces the amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere in an effort to help slow down climate change.

Electronic Drive Equipment

Equipment with electric and hybrid powertrains are more efficient than traditional equipment, which means that it uses less fuel and emits fewer emissions. While Caterpillar® has been incorporating electric drive technology into its heavy equipment for many years, advances in technology are making all-electric equipment and machinery a very real possibility for the company.

Energy Storage and Battery Power

Energy storage is the process of storing energy so that it can be used at a later time. This is beneficial because it allows businesses to use energy when it is most efficient, which can help to save money and reduce emissions.

Caterpillar® has introduced the Cat® Energy Storage System (CESS), which is a battery-based energy storage system that is designed for use with Cat® generators. The system can store up to 500 kilowatt-hours of energy, which is enough to power a home for up to four days or a business for up to two days. The system is also scalable, which means that it can be expanded to meet the needs of larger businesses.
