Visually Inspect Your Machine

When you begin your day, the first thing you’ll want to do is visually inspect your Cat®. You should create a routine check and inspect your machine in the same order each day to ensure you aren’t missing anything. It doesn’t have to take more than 10 or 15 minutes, but this step is crucial to ensuring that your heavy machinery is ready to be safely used. Keep an eye out for any cracks, loose parts, or built-up debris. This is also a good time to scan your job site for any potential hazards.

Use the Proper Technique to Climb On Board

Once you’ve completed your visual inspection, it’s time to climb on board. As easy as this seems, many injuries occur during this process. To get into your cab safely, always make sure you maintain three points of contact with the machine, either with two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand. Take your time getting up and never try to mount or dismount your Cat® with tools in your hand.

Buckle Up While Using Your Cat®

Once you’re inside your machine, it’s time to buckle up. This is an important step that will help keep you safe throughout your workday. Additionally, this is a good time to check and make sure your seat belt is in good condition. Just like every other part of heavy machinery, seat belts have a life expectancy and can be replaced when needed.

Always Keep an Eye on Your Surroundings

While you’re working, it’s essential you keep an eye on your surroundings and continue to scan. It can be easy to solely rely on cameras and technology, but realistically, these tools shouldn’t be used on their own. Always make sure you double-check your area for hazards, as well as other people and machines to ensure your and everyone else's safety.
